What You Learn in the Program
Instead of subject-based teaching, medical degree studies in Linz focus on comprehensive base-knowledge medicine in organ and topic-centered modules:
- You cover a topic in parallel with all of the basic medical subjects (anatomy, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology). Physics and chemistry mainly covered during the first semester (building blocks of life).
- You simultaneously learn about individual organs (such as the kidneys) as well as clinical perspectives to acquire associative connections as well as initial insight into clinical practices.
- Clinical modules (semesters 5-10) focus on learning about one organ from the perspective of various fields of speciality (such as cardiovascular disease: the module covers internal medicine, cardiac surgery, etc.)
In addition to medical expertise, a strong social skill set, compassionate bedside manner, and good communication make patients feel like they are in good hands with you. Therefore, one aspect of the program focuses on general medicine and your clinical experience (from the first semester onwards). In the beginning you study in a real environment and later at the university clinics. You hone your ability to work effectively together with colleagues, superiors and members of other medical professions as part of a team. Right from the start of the program, you also learn how to treat patients with the care and respect they deserve.
As part of a new generation of physicians, in Linz you will also learn that your medical decisions have clinical, economic, ethical, social and legal implications (health care research). You will learn more about scientific approaches and modern findings in the field of patient care (such as, how good a proven treatment or a new drug is). This holistic understanding of medical treatment will be reflected in your activities as a medical professional.
