Gustav Pomberger Presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award

Professor Gustav Pomberger was presented with the RFT OÖ Lifetime Achievement Award.

Prof. Pomberger’s activities have played a significant role in shaping Upper Austria as a leading location in the fields of technology and research. The academic scholar, who maintains a renowned international network at his disposal, is an undisputed computer science expert, an area that is indispensable in Upper Austria in support of a strong economy. Prof. (FH) DI Dr. Margarethe Überwimmer, jury chair for the award presented by the Council for Research and Technology in Upper Austria (RFT OÖ), remarked: "Professor Gustav Pomberger has influenced an entire generation of computer scientists and is an outstanding connector between university of applied sciences and JKU, particularly in the field of computer sciences. When it comes to what he does, he does it from the very core of his being."


About Gustav Pomberger
Gustav Pomberger, Professor Emeritus of Practice-Oriented Computer Sciences at the JKU and former head of the Institute of Information Systems - Software Engineering, earned his habilitation in Practice-Oriented Computer Sciences at the JKU Linz in 1985. He was appointed full professor for Software Engineering at the Johannes Kepler University Linz in 1987. Additional appointments include the ETH Zurich (Chair of Algorithms of New Computer Architectures) in 1987, the University of Regensburg (Chair of Information Systems) in 1990, and the Vienna University of Technology (Chair of Software Engineering) in 1991.


Together with Professor Lutz Heinrich, he was responsible for establishing the institute and the major of Business Informatics at the JKU. He served as head of the Christian Doppler Research Laboratory for Methods and Tools of Software Engineering between 1992 to 1999, and as head of the Institute for Information Systems - Software Engineering at the JKU since 1988. Prof. Pomberger was appointed Senior Fellow of the Christian Doppler Research Society in 1999.


In addition to his activities at the JKU Linz, he also held lectures at Hagenberg UAS in the field of algorithms and data structures. Prof. Pomberger retired in October of 2017; he will serve as chairman of the University Council at the Linz University of Art & Industrial Design until 2023.
