MIT-JIP Girls in Engineering - Boys in Education.

The "MiT-JiP Girls in Engineering - Boys in Education" program was carried out from 1.6.2013 - 31.12.2014 by the Department of Gender & Diversity Management at the Johannes Kepler University Linz in cooperation with the Women's Office at the University of Passau. The program supports providing information about job and educational options for boys and girls without gender bias. This project was part of the program "INTERREG Bavaria - Austria 2007-2013" and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Created as a "comprehensible and tangible" result of the program, the team created a handout that includes a compendium of texts and exercises on the topics as wellas numerous examples and copy templates. The handout has been designed to encourage teachers to support their students' interests in engineering and social studies without gender bias.

Detailed info about the program!

A large number of those who drop out of school end up pursuing gender-typical jobs such as a hairdresser or a car mechanic. The foundations laid in early childhood mark children for the future. In addition to home life, schools (as an educational institution) play a key role in identifying and perpetuating gender stereotypes. A student's choice of what he/she wants to be later in life is influenced by gender-specific socialization at home, at school and by society.

  • Spark an interest in technical and social areas to broaden awareness as to the types of jobs and education area available regardless of gender
  • Acquire new skills, especially to support girls' interests in engineering and science and boys' interests in social fields
  • Develop educational tools and materials to support gender-sensitive didactics at primary schools
  • Create teachers' training manuals and materials to implement as part of teacher education programs
  • Develop potential skilled labor opportunities for Lower Bavaria and Upper Austria
  • Create synergies and network with program partners in the area of education, the local economy, advocacy, and existing initiatives

  • Cross-border, continual educational event for primary school teachers held in three consecutive sections focusing on gender-specific didactics and career orientation
  • Networking regional project group workshops
  • Organize reflective discussions between school management, teachers and program managers (once per semester)
  • Network with strategic partners in the local government, in the local business community, in education as well as those involved in existing initatives
  • Organize local networking meetings
  • Organize school field trips to companies that have a visible proportion of men or women working in non-stereotypical positions
