The Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz broke new ground in gender equality with the "WE Can Play Football, Too!" program.
Anyone who believes "football is just for boys" should think again!
The program is over but we would still like to make some of the program details available.
The program was made possible through collaborative efforts with the Upper Austrian Office for Women's Affairs, opens an external URL in a new window and the Women's Football Center OÖ (FFZ OÖ), opens an external URL in a new window:
The FFZ OÖ offered introductory football lessons at both schools and on-site at the football club. Women footballers from the FFZ OÖ managed to get the girls excited about learning and playing football. Coordination exercises alternated with practice sessions kicking a football. Everyone enjoyed the exercise as well as the team spirit fostered by the trainers.
While the girls discovered the joys of playing football, the teachers took part in a workshop led by Mag. Susanne Kaufmann, staff member at the Department of Gender & Diversity Management (currently on leave) about the importance of sports for personality development as well as applying gender-sensitive education in the classroom. The workshop covered the following:
- How can I, as a teacher, contribute to the childrens' sense of gender development?
- How can stereotypes and prejudices be addressed and broken?
- How can the childrens' skills and talents be fostered and made better visible?
- How does sports support personality development?
Program Objectives:
- Encourage girls to learn and play football
- Organize workshops for educators to teach them how to encourage the development of self-esteem for girls and how to integrate gender-sensitive pedagogy in the classroom
There were no fees to take part.
The program took place in three districts in Upper Austria: Linz Land, Wels Land and Urfahr Umgebung.
