June 6, 2024: Somewhere Over the Rainbow? Dilemmas of LGBTQ+ rights policies in a modern society.

Sexual orientation and gender identity are some of modern society's most debated and polarizing topics. While we in Europe are at the cusp of attaining legal equality for those in the LGBTQ+ community, conservatives and those on the right continue to call many of the gains made during recent decades into question.

LGBTQ+ issues and individuals are becoming increasingly visible, affecting political parties, organizations and the economy. From rainbow flags on trams to colorful shopping bags and Pride Whoppers, many companies are aligning their advertisement strategies accordingly, especially during Pride Month in June. These strategies are often labeled as "pinkwashing". But is that a problem in itself? And is the increased visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals and issues exclusively advantageous?

The talk shows just how important it is to take a closer look at companies, organizations, or parties that display rainbow flags and addresses how to establish sustainable commitment.

About Michael Hunklinger

Michael Hunklinger, a political scientist and author, currently teaches and conducts research at the University of Amsterdam in the area of diversity and inequality. He is also actively involved in various international projects, focusing primarily on issues of political participation and representation of LGBTQ+ individuals. Alongside many academic publications, he also regularly comments on and analyzes LGBTQ+ issues on TV and radio.
