The university cafeteria, also called the "Mensa" on campus, is Austria's only organic university cafeteria and a popular meeting place on campus. The Mensa was awarded its 4th Kessel award (a "star" for large-scale cafeterias) in 2012. In an effort to support sustainability, the Mensa began serving locally sourced, organic meat in May 2019 and makes sure ingredients used are regional and organic.
The can seat up to 560 people at one time and the cafeteria itself serves up anywhere between 1,300 and 1,500 meals a day. Outside of dining hours, the Mensa is also a popular place to meet up and study. The Mensa also offers a food catering service which can be booked for university events as well as by external persons/companies.
The Mensarei Restaurant
The JKU cafeteria also has an in-house á la carte restaurant called "The Mensarei". The restaurant features a separate menu and customers can dine in a more restaurant-like setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the cafeteria.
Uni Center
There is the large banquet hall location on the 1st floor of the Uni Center as well as additional seminar rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors.
Dining Services on Campus
Going hungry when at the JKU is nearly impossible. The Teichwerk, dasKUYO, Ch@t Café, and Science Café offer a wide range of culinary delights. A small Spar grocery store also opened its doors on campus in June 2019. The Spar store is located in the LIT Open Innovation Center and even has an app to let you create your own sandwich. In addition to two other cafeterias (the KHG-Mensa and the Raab Mensa), there are several other restaurants and snack bars located in close proximity to the campus, including The* Obelisk at the tram stop "Universität/JKU".
