The Macke Scholarship for MSc Studies at the University of Linz.

Established in partnership with the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), the Macke Foundation is announcing a 10-month MSc scholarship also this year to study a minimum of a Winter and/or Summer Semester at the JKU. Upon successful completion of the first year of the Master's degree program, the scholarship can be extended by up to 10 additional months. The scholarship covers the following Master's degree programs:

a) MSc in Biophysics
b) MSc in Physics

Classes at the JKU finish at the end of June and students are expected to complete required examinations by the end of July. The scholarship provides €800 a month, together with €500 to support travel costs up to € 8,000 for the full period.

The main target group includes (a) students who are currently in the last year of their Bachelor's degree program, or (b) students who have completed their Bachelor's degree by the end of February this year. Applicants should demonstrate high grades and have completed the degree program in the minimal amount of time, plus - at most - one additional semester. The applicant should then study two terms at the JKU, attending different courses. On account of legal/visa reasons, the applicant is required to be formally enrolled at the JKU, which also creates an option to earn a second year in a MSc degree at the JKU. The application process does not, however, require drafting and completing an MSc thesis. All of the MSc courses are taught in English. In the event that there is no qualified applicant in the first year of MSc program applying for the scholarship, MSc students in the second year of the program (writing MSc thesis) may apply for the scholarship.

Scholarship applicants are requested to submit the following documents by May 1st of this year. Following a Skype interview, the selection will take place on May 30th. Please submit the following documents as part of the application (send scanned and zipped PDF files to: mackestiftung(at)jku.at by no later than May 1st):

(1a) Transcript of records for the first 3 (or 3.5) years, in the national language and an English (or German) translation
(1b) Final high school diploma: in the national language and an English (or German) translation
(1c) Students in the first MSc year only: an original copy of the Bachelor's degree diploma in the national language and an English (or German) translation
(1d) Diploma supplement in the national language and an English (or German) translation; if nationally applicable, see Diploma Supplement, opens an external URL in a new window
(the applicant may translate all required translations or use web-based assistance)

(2) A Letter of Intent written in English or German covering the following:
a) Motivation as to why the applicant would like to study in Austria and at the JKU
b) Intended schedule of courses at the JKU ( see KUSSS courses from the current year and the prior year, opens an external URL in a new window)
c) Scientific topics of interest and related institutes as well as where the applicant would like to work while writing an MSc thesis (if he / she plans to graduate from the JKU.)

(3) Two letters of recommendation (in English or German) written by professors who taught the applicant during the course of his/her undergraduate studies and who know the applicant well.

(4) A copy of your valid passport

(5) Proof of proficiency in English (proof of proficiency in German can be provided by, for example, grades in your high school transcripts).

All of the documents mentioned in (1) do not need to be certified or authorized German/English translations. Once the applicant has been selected, he/she should formally enroll online at the JKU as soon as possible via the JKU student registration page, opens an external URL in a new window for applicants who hold an international undergraduate degree. At this point, the university's Admissions Office will require certified translations and apostilles issued by the Austrian embassy / consulate in the applicant's home country.

Once again, submit the required documents (scanned and zipped PDF files) to: mackestiftung(at)jku.at by no later than May 1st.
