Scholarships.

You can apply for the following scholarhips - regardless of citizenship - to take part in a study abroad program:

 

If you are receiving a study grant ("Studienbeihilfe"), you can apply to receive your study grant abroad, opens an external URL in a new window for a maximum of 20 months. Submit the application to the Austrian Study Grant Authority in Linz, opens an external URL in a new window. You will need a copy of your official credit transfer approval.

If the amount of the study grant abroad you receive to help you study abroad is lower than the JKU scholarship, you will get the difference under the JKU exchange xcholarship (providing the funds are available).

Scholarships are between € 470 - € 520 per month depending on the country (amounts for 2024/25:

The study abroad grant ("Auslandsbeihilfe") can additionally be received.

Students who are mobile with children and students with disabilities will receive an additional special allowance of 250 Euros per month. In cases of chronic illness, this special allowance will be granted if additional costs arise abroad due to the illness.

From the academic year 2024/25 students receive additionally a travel support. You can find more details here.

Since Switzerland is not participating in the Erasmus+ program, Swiss universities provide funding for their incoming students. For further information, please contact the respective Swiss university.

If Upper Austria has been your official main residence for at least 1 year and you still need financial aid to help fund your studies abroad, you can also apply for a scholarship from the state of Upper Austria as part of the IPS (internationalization program for students). The amount is a max. of € 100 per month. In addition, you could receive a travel allowance for up to max. € 240 in Europe and a max. of € 480 outside of Europe.

If the additional costs abroad due to a disability or chronic illness exceed 250 Euros, an inclusion support equal to the actual costs can be requested. In this case, please contact the International Office as early as possible.

For other exchange programs, you can apply for additional financial aid from the JKU in your scholarship application.

As part of the study abroad program, there is also financial aid available to attend language courses:

  1. If you have taken a fee-based language course at the JKU (French, Italian, or Spanish) to help you prepare for your study abroad program, then you will be reimbursed for the costs at Reimbursement of fees | Center for Business Languages and Intercultural Communication (jku.at)
  2. If you have taken a fee-based basic language course at another institution than the JKU, then you can contact us and we will check the funding oppurtunity.
  3. Erasmus+: If you would like to take an intensive language course at your host university before beginning your studies abroad then you can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

For a 4-week language course abroad you can apply for a separate scholarship for an intensive language course. Please note the requirements!

Applying for a Scholarship.

You can only apply for the Erasmus+ scholarship, the JKU scholarship, and the IPS scholarship after you have been accepted to the study abroad program.

  • JUNE 1: Study abroad programs beginning in Winter Semester, meaning in July at the earliest
  • NOVEMBER 1: Study abroad programs beginning in Summer Semester
