If you wish to enroll in a German-language degree program and German is not your first language, you must provide proof of language proficiency in German.
Degree-seeking applicants are required to show proof of a certain level of language proficiency for admission to certain academic degree programs. Degree-seeking applicants wishing to be admitted to degree programs taught in German are required to show proof of German language proficiency at the A2 level.* The certificates/diplomas accepted by the JKU as proof of language proficiency are listed below.

The language certificate(s) may not be older than 2 years at the time of application.
German Level B2
- Austrian school leaving certificate ("Matura")
- Matriculation certificate from a German-language school or an Austrian or German school abroad
- Passing grade in German in an annual report card preceding the final school-leaving certificates or on the school-leaving certificate (such as a "Matura" or "Abitur") issued by an educational institution recognized in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
- An IB diploma awarded in accordance with the rules of the "International Baccalaureate Organization" with german as
- Language A with a minimum grade of 4 or
- Language B with a minimum grade of 5 (HL) or 7 (SL)
- Certificate of completion of a minimum of two years of academic studies in the German language completed at a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Austria or abroad
- Certificate of successfully passing the supplementary examination for proof of proficiency in German as part of a special B2 level university course.
