Dissertations are the scientific works which, unlike diploma and master's theses, serve to demonstrate the ability to deal with scientific issues independently.

In regards to writing on the topic and academically supervising students, please adhere to provisions as stated under the Copyright Act, BGBl.Nr. 111/1936.

Regulations before October 1, 2021 ("Doctorate - Old" - RE / SOWI / TN)
 

After admission to the doctoral program and the positive completion of the (first) dissertation colloquium (except PhD Program in Economics), the dissertation agreement must be concluded and the registration of the topic of the dissertation must be announced immediately using the appropriate form in the Examination and Recognition Service.

Please use the appropriate of the following templates for the cover sheet of your  Dissertation and make sure to

  • state the name of the degree program correctly in full according to the study handbook and
  • list the supervisor, the second evaluator and any co-supervisors (after consultation with the supervisor) with all academic titles (source: JKU homepage).

If your dissertation agreement specifies that the doctoral studies will be part of a structured doctoral program, please use the appropriate template.

From March 1, 2022 the submission of your academic paper to the Examination and Recognition Service will be exclusively in electronic form.

 

  • Before uploading your work, please first send the cover sheet to the Examination and Recognition Service by email (pas(at)jku.at) to check the formal requirements.
  • After receiving positive feedback from the Examination and Recognition Service, upload the academic paper in pdf format at the following address: forms.jku.at/pas/thesis, opens an external URL in a new window.
  • The PDF file must be saved in such a way that the text of the thesis can be further processed digitally. In particular, it must not contain scanned image files. The file must also not be encrypted or password protected and should be saved in ISO 19005-1 compatible format (PDF/A) for long-term archiving.
  • If your dissertation is to be excluded from publication, you must obtain the confirmation of the supervisor, fill out the “Sperrantrag” and send both by email to hochschulschriften.bibliothek(at)jku.at. According to 86 Abs 4 UG, the blocking request will only be granted if you can credibly show that important economic or legal interests are at risk.
  • Proposal by Supervisor

    The examiners are to be announced to the Examination and Recognition Service in good time (approx. 4 weeks) before the submission of the dissertation. If an external examiner is to be used, the corresponding form (TN - including short description, printout of homepage, CV) must also be submitted with the announcement.
    Subsequently, the proposal for the assignment of the examiner will be forwarded to the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Students via the Examination and Recognition Service.

  • Doctorate Degree in Law
    In order to have your dissertation evaluators approved by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, please submit the form "Genehmigung Prüfungssenat" to the Department of Examination and Recognition Services four weeks before you plan to submit the dissertation.
     
  • Doctorate Degree Program in Social Sciences, Economics & Business / Doctorate Degree in Social Sciences and Humanities
    In order to have your dissertation evaluators approved by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, please submit the form "Genehmigung Prüfungssenat" to the Department of Examination and Recognition Services four weeks before you plan to submit the dissertation.
     
  • Doctorate Degree in Natural Sciences / Doctorate Degree in Technical Sciences
    The dissertation must be submitted to the Dept. of Examinations and Recognition Services a minimum of four weeks before the viva voce (oral defense) deadline.

In accordance with § 86 para. 4 of the Austrian Universities Act, the application is only to be granted by the responsible body if the student can credibly demonstrate that important legal or economic interests provided by the student are at risk. If this is the case, please clarify in the application!

Regulations beginning October 1, 2021 ("Doctorate New")

After admission to a doctoral degree program and successfully passing the (first) dissertation colloquium (exception: PhD Program in Economics and Statistics, doctorate degree for Engineering & Natural Sciences), complete the dissertation agreement and submit the form to the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services by the end of the third semester starting from the date of admission.
