PhD in Transformation Studies. Art x Science.

Wanted: Aspiring scholars, researchers, and scientists conducting transdisciplinary research at the crossroads of art & science, and providing new food for thought as well as shedding light on potential solutions to address and solve existing and future global challenges.

By applying a cross-disciplinary research approach that brings art, science and civic studies together, the joint, transdisciplinary PhD program Transformation Studies. Art x Science concentrates on generating knowledge and understanding, encouraging students in the program to find creative and innovative approaches to research as well as to how we think. The dissertation should focus on transformative and innovative research at the crossroads of art and science.

A prerequisite for a doctoral dissertation involves team supervision consisting of a dissertation supervisor based at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, and a dissertation supervisor based at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

The JKU Linz and the University of Applied Arts Vienna are currently creating a special, shared inter-university space to support art and science: the "Art x Science School for Transformation"!

PhD in Transformation Studies: Main Areas of Focus

  • Transdisciplinary Research. Drawing on preliminary studies, the program focuses on one's academic dissertation and an artistic project. Reflective discussions about the applied methods and approaches in transdisciplinary research will play a pivotal role.
  • Understand the potential in bringing different knowledge cultures together to examine, analyze, and drive transformation processes forward.
  • Acquire applied expertise in conducting transdisciplinary research and applying acquired skills to real-world situations.
  • Learn more about different forms of presentation as well as how to effectively convey new findings and communicate information about one's research to diverse audiences.

  • conduct both individual and collaboration-based transdisciplinary research by pooling expertise and hands-on, real-world experience in art and science
  • generate new perspectives and approaches to address today's challenging developments
  • critically reflect on and generate new insights to better understand and tackle increasingly complex global issues, particularly with regard to multidimensional transformation dynamics
  • actively engage in international debate in academia and in the arts and become more involved with the wider community
