Chief physician Dr. Andreas Shamiyeh was presented with his habilitation/post-doc certificate in the subject area of “Surgery” on April 2. Dr. Shamiyeh studied medicine in Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1995. The surgeon trained at the Enns State Hospital, the State Neurological Clinic, and the Linz General Hospital. Prim. Dr. Shamiyeh has been head of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the now Kepler University Hospital since 2012. He earned a post-doctorate at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck. Dr. Shamiyeh was born in Linz, is married, and is the father of three.

Those pursuing a habilitation/post-doc undergo an academic evaluation in regard to special qualifications that proves their ability to independently conduct academic/scientific research and teach the entire depth and breadth of their selected subject area [venia docendi], This, in turn, is the prerequisite to grant authorization to teach that particular subject area. A so-called “Umhabilitation” is a streamlined procedure in which an individual receives a teaching qualification for another university or faculty.
