Curriculum Vitae

Research profile

Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Tobias Gotterbarm is the Head of the Institute for Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Kepler University Hospital. His research primarily focuses on in vitro and in vivo musculoskeletal tissue engineering, introducing novel approaches such as biomaterials, stem cells and growth factors to address chondral, osteochondral, and tendon defect healing. Over the past two decades, he has gained extensive experience conducting in vivo experimental studies in large animal models using 3D-printed scaffolds, stem cells, and other regenerative cells. His applied basic research includes the characterization and optimization of osteo- and chondrogenic differentiation, functional analysis, immune characterization, and immune functional assays of human MSCs (e.g., the role of T-regulatory lymphocytes). Other areas of focus include osteoarthritis, bone regeneration, and functionalized biomaterials. Prof. Gotterbarm is also actively involved in clinical outcome studies related to arthroplasty of various joints, including unicondylar knee joint prostheses, cementless hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of degenerative joint diseases.
