Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Högler

Career and Research

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Högler is the Head of the Deparmtnet for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Kepler University Hospital. He completed his studies and specialist training at the University Clinic Innsbruck. Early on, he discovered his interest in hormonal diseases, which he deepened during an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship at the renowned Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, Australia. From 2001-2004, he received extensive training in paediatric endocrinology and conducted clinical studies on growth disorders and bone development. Upon his return to Innsbruck, he worked as a senior endocrinologist and habilitated in 2005 on bone strength in children. In 2007, Prof. Högler moved to the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in England, where he led and expanded the department into the largest endocrinology department in England.

In 2018, the JKU Linz appointed Prof. Högler to the professorship for paediatric and adolescent medicine at the newly established university clinic. Prof. Högler is highly regarded internationally, evident from his global lecture activities, the publication achievements of his clinic, his leadership in the Global Consensus for the Treatment of Rickets, and his long-standing role as a committee member of international professional societies such as the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), and the International Society of Children’s Bone Health (ISCBH). He holds an honorary professorship at the University of Birmingham. His motivation stems from a commitment to providing the best possible treatment for his patients, which drives his continuous improvement of treatments through research. Passing on expertise is particularly important to him:

"Training the next generation of endocrinologists and paediatricians is very important to me. I support my team in exceeding their potential and adopting an international perspective, and the initial overseas stays and publication activities show that we are succeeding in passing on motivation within the team."

Prof. Högler is also internationally engaged in education. He founded and leads the ISBCH Bone School and teaches aspiring endocrinologists in international courses. Endocrinology is one of many specialisations in paediatrics. Long-term specialised training is the foundation for expertise, and therefore families, as well as adults, find experts in all specialised areas at the Children’s Clinic Linz.
