Gastrointestinal Pathology.

Key focus areas are the evaluation of the response of esophageal, gastric, and colorectal tumors to different, usually preoperative therapies, and the investigation of factors responsible for varying response behaviors. These are studied at the morphological and molecular genetic levels. The aim of these studies is to identify biomarkers for response prediction and to develop standardized, prognostically relevant systems for tumor regression grading.

Another key area in the field of gastrointestinal tumors is the investigation of morphological and molecular genetic heterogeneity. This heterogeneity can occur within a tumor or during the course of a disease from the primary tumor to metastases, posing both therapeutic and diagnostic challenges.
