CALL TO ATTEND the EC2U Autumn School: Geographic Data Science for Sustainability in Jena (Germany), October 7-9, 2025 

Travel to the heart of Thuringia to discover just how data drives sustainability!

Take part in the EC2U Autumn School “Geographic Data Science (GIS) for Sustainability” in Jena (Germany) this coming October. Explore cutting-edge methods in spatial data science, GIS, and programming over three immersive days while also connecting with fellow students and researchers across Europe.

Listen to dynamic presentations, engage in compelling workshops and labs led by experts, and take part in an optional field trip to get a taste of real-world applications designed to support sustainability.

  • Program Dates The main program begins on Tuesday, October 7, and ends on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

  • Field Trip: The field trip is optional and will take place on Friday, October 10. Please note, however, that the EC2U mobility grant does not cover the costs for this particular activity.

  • Travel Days:  Arrive in Jena: Monday, October 6, 2025
    Return travel: You may opt to return on Friday, October 10 (once the main program concludes), or on Saturday, October 11 (if you decide to take part in the optional excursion).
    Please arrange your travel and accommodation plans according to your choice and follow the mobility grant guidelines.

Students in their last year of a Bachelor’s degree program, students enrolled in a Master’s degree program, and PhD candidates in fields related to geography, GIS, earth/environmental sciences, and/or engineering.

 

Additional eligibility criteria for JKU Linz applicants:

At the time of both submitting an application and traveling, you must be an active, degree-seeking student (no exchange students) at the JKU .

  • Undergraduate/Diploma degree students must have:

    • successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters at the JKU

    • successfully completed all of the StEOP requirements

    • been actively taking exams with a minimum of 16 ECTS credits earned over the last two semesters

  • Graduate students (Master's degree program):

    • Students must have earned a minimum of 16 ECTS credits during the past two semesters, or past (most recent) semester.
      Newly enrolled Master's degree students without prior ECTS credits are not eligible to apply

  • Doctoral/PhD candidates:

    • there is no specific prerequisite for those in the first first two years of their program

    • those in the third year of the program or higher will require a signed dissertation agreement.

Applicants must have:

  • a good understanding of basic statistical methods (such a multiple linear regression)

  • experience with GIS or geospatial data

  • ideally, basic programming skills in R or Python

There are 3 grant spots available.

Selected participants will receive a mobility grant of up to €1,000 which covers:

  • Travel costs

  • Accommodation expenses

  • Participation during the core program (October 7–9, 2025)

  • Two travel days: October 6 (arrival) and October 10 or 11 (return)

Important information about the field trip on October 10:
The field trip on October 10 is optional and the EC2U mobility grant does not cover the costs. This means:

  • expenses incurred on October 10 (such as meals, transportation, hotel) will not be reimbursed.

  • if you opt to stay for the field trip, your hotel receipt must clearly separate the nights covered by the grant (up to October 9) from any additional nights (such as October 10).

  • if the hotel invoice includes the optional night and there is no clear separate hotel bill, we cannot process your reimbursement!

  • As Jena is relatively close to Linz, you may want to consider returning on the evening of October 10 to avoid an additional hotel costs.

Please plan your stay and receipts accordingly to ensure your grant can be processed as smoothly as possible.

No, this is an on-site, in-person meeting only.

Selected applicants will be notified by June 3, 2025, and must confirm participation by June 10, 2025.

Logistical Information

Information regarding Reimbursement

Although you are required to initially cover all of the expenses yourself, if eligible, the EC2U mobility grant will reimburse expenses of up to €1000.

Accommodations

To help you plan your trip, the University of Jena recommends the following hotel and has pre-reserved a block of rooms for participants:

Rates per night (without breakfast):

  • Single occupancy room: €79

  • Double occupancy room (per person): €44.50

  • Triple occupancy room (per person): €36.34

Breakfast is optional: €13.90 per person, per day

Meals

You will have to pay for meals yourself however, the mobility grant gives you a daily allowance to help cover the costs of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Important Information:

  • You are responsible for reserving and paying for your accommodations directly with the hotel.

  • All eligible expenses will be reimbursed (up to the grant limit).

  • If you decide to stay on for the optional field trip on October 10, your hotel invoice must clearly separate reimbursable nights (up to October 9) from any additional nights.
