Online registration for a spot in the medical degree programs (human medicine and dentistry) beginning this fall is expected to open on March 1, 2021, at: www.medizinstudieren.at.
March 31, 2021, is the deadline to sign for the entrance examinations to be held on July 21, 2021 (between approximately 8 AM - 5 PM).
See: www.medizinstudieren.at, opens an external URL in a new window for important information regarding the admissions process, all available study locations, and answers to frequently asked questions. In lieu of the current pandemic and as during the previous year, the admissions test for Vienna university will be conducted at two locations. Applicants will once again be allocated to a test location based on their residential address. As back in 2020, applicants from western Austria and Germany will take the test at the Messezentrum Salzburg and all others, including applicants for the dentistry program, will take the test at the Messe Wien.
The website contains comprehensive information to best help applicants prepare for the entrance examination, including sample exercises, information about the individual test sections and task groups, general processing instructions, and guidance. Applicants are not required to provide proof of school-leaving qualifications when taking the test in July (meaning an Austrian Matura or German Abitur examination results) or in order to register online or take the MedAT admission test. Proof of school-leaving qualifications are only required for enrolment once the applicant has successfully passed the exam and has been officially accepted to the program. The results are expected to be announced during August, most likely by the end of calendar week 33.
Entrance Examination Content for the MedAT-H and MedAT-Z
The entrance examination to study human medicine (MedAT-H) contains various sections, a written section, and is divided into the following segments:
- Basic Comprehension of Medical Studies: Testing knowledge of prior school content in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
- Text Comprehension: Reading skills and text comprehension.
- Cognitive Abilities and Skills: This section consists of five groups of tasks (assembling figures, number sequences, word fluency, memory retention, and recognizing implications) and also measures one’s basic cognitive skills and abilities.
- Social-Emotional Skills: This section consists of task groups to recognize emotions and social decision making to capture essential aspects of social-emotional skills.
For the most part, the entrance examination for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is identical to the MedAT-H. Instead of the Text Comprehension and the task group Recognize Implications sections, the task groups Wire Bending and Mirroring Shapes are used in the Manual Skills section.
