This year the JKU will accept 180 students in the medical degree program at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine. Of those, 60 will complete their medical degree training entirely in Linz.
The number of prospective students applying for admission to the medical degree program in Human Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University Linz continues to grow annually. Last year 932 prospective applicants applied to take the entrance examination. For the first time, the JKU will be able to accept 180 students to the program and 60 of those students will be able to complete the entire program in Linz. Prospective applicants can sign up from March 1 to 30, 2018, to take the entrance examination in July.
In 2017, the number of applicants signing up to take the entrance examination rose by 15% compared to the year before. The number even rose by 56% compared to 2015. However, compared to other medical universities in Austria, the chances of getting a coveted spot in the medical degree program is very good. The Faculty of Medicine is adhering to its outlined strategy to raise the number of admitted students from 120 to 180 by this year. The program is expected to be at full capacity by 2022/2023 and accept 300 students annually to the program.
Those who choose to study medicine in Linz will benefit from a completely new educational concept. JKU Rector Meinhard Lukas remarked, “Our students have a unique opportunity to complete a new kind of medical degree program in which they benefit from both the medical research being conducted at other faculties as well as real-world expertise at the Kepler University Hospital and in private practice.” The Kepler University Hospital has over 1,800 beds and is Austria’s second largest hospital. The ground-breaking ceremony for a new research and teaching center is scheduled for this spring. Rector Lukas added, “Our medical degree program features over 400 instructors to support student learning as well a modern infrastructure.”
