Algebra for Beginners

It's never too early to get started. Today Prof. Kauers gave a lecture on algebra at a local Kindergarten.

Algebra at Kindergarten

After hearing about the magic of permutations in the previous year, this year's Kindergarten lecture covered another topic of group theory: reflections. We observed that the picture in the mirror is flipped, and what it means for a figure to have an axial symmetry. We also saw how to see our own back side using two mirrors, and what happens if we place two mirrors in a corner. We hope that this morning session raised some interest in mathematical thinking among the kids.
