Career opportunities in
Quantum Computing.

We currently have funding to hire new team members at all academic levels:
undergraduate researchers, PhD students and Postdocs.

Research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • quantum-classical interfaces, aka classical shadows
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_shadow, opens an external URL in a new window
  • machine learning with data obtained from real quantum experiments
  • new qudit-based quantum computing primitives, e.g. algorithms, compilation & error correction
  • randomized algorithm design for numerical linear algebra and large-scale data analysis
  • randomized algorithm design for convex and non-convex optimization problems
  • new quantum meta-algorithms for convex optimization tasks
  • quantum variants of Conway's Game of Life (and other cellular automata)
  • gamification of quantum computing foundations
  • and many more…

Desirable skills include knowledge of quantum computing and/or machine learning, and programming languages (e.g. Python, Julia), as well as (some) familiarity with mathematical reasoning. Note that these skills are desirable, but not strict prerequisites. On the contrary, we give our team members the opportunity to learn on the job and grow into independent quantum researchers with a versatile skill set.

Each position comes with the potential to travel and present your work at international conferences and the ability to be part of a young and dynamic team. You will also be supported if you wish to develop your teaching and/or public communication steps.

Postdoc positions are typically for 2 years with the potential for further extension. The starting date is flexible and we offer an annual salary of about 66K EUR, as well as a generous travel budget. Healthcare is also covered by this appointment.

PhD positions are for a period of 3-4 years with an annual salary of about 50K EUR. Healthcare is also covered by this appointment. Successful candidates will be associated with the Computer Science Division at Johannes Kepler University Linz and complete their doctoral studies with either a Doctor of Natural Sciences (Doctor Rerum Naturalum) or an Engineering Doctorate (Doctor Technicae).

Undergraduate research internships are flexible in terms of duration and weekly hours and office space is provided at our institute. We offer the standard hourly rate of a student employee at JKU Linz which amounts to about 27,14 EUR per hour (plus vacation pay and Christmas bonus).

How to apply?

To apply, please send an e-mail to elisabeth.peheim(at)jku.at (subject: 'Postdoc/PhD/internship application') with the following documents:

  2. comprehensive CV
  3. transcript of records,
  4. publication list (if applicable)
  5. contact data of (at least) one academic reference, e.g. your thesis supervisor
