CASE STUDY RESEARCH METHOD AND PUBLICATION

Goals
Students will learn to differentiate various qualitative research methods. Against this background, they
will understand the main characteristics of the case study research method and gain competency in
developing a rigorous case study research design covering the overall research strategy, sampling,
data collection, and data analysis. Students also learn to translate designs into journal publications.

Contents
Part 1: Foundations

  • An overview of research methods/approaches
  • Epistemology
  • Rigour and relevance

Part 2: Case study research and publication

  • Case study research design (strategy, sample, data collection, analysis)
  • Induction, abduction, deduction
  • Single vs. multiple (cross) case analysis

  • Learning by example: insight into research designs in high-quality publications
  • Student interaction / student inputs from their own PhD projects and related experience
  • Workshop (team-based refinement of selected students’ research designs)

Grading
