How to Study When You Have Reading and Writing Difficulties
(Synonyms: Dyslexia, Dyslexia, Reading and Writing Disorder, Reading and Writing Weakness) Are you at just the right point in your studies in terms of content but are your reading and/or writing skills are slowing you down? Would you like to find out what it is exactly that is holding you back and find out if there is anything that can help? Are you also interested in supporting research in the field of literacy?
Funded by the State of Upper Austria and the Ministry of Education, Science & Research, the Institute Integriert Studieren, the Institute of Sociology, SID, and the Research Institute of Developmental Medicine have come together to create the JKU Dyslexia Lab. The project aims to survey, assess, research, derive, and establish suitable concepts to support efficient services as well as the JKU's infrastructure to assist JKU students and employees affected by dyslexia (meaning difficulties to read and write - RWD). In this regard, we would need a sufficient number of interested participants to take part in the project.
The Plan:
We would like to invite JKU students and JKU employees to take part, particularly those who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, OR are suspected of being dyslexic. There is no charge to take part in the program, or any need to undergo any of the tests, activities, or findings. The activities cover three different areas:
- An assessment and testing in developmental medicine (Research Institute of Developmental Medicine), and if - and in what form/to what extent - the individual suffers from a reading and writing disorder (approximately half a day)
- Biographical research and an interview (Institute of Sociology, SID): The participants' personal experiences and their personal background to pursue an academic degree at a university, the barriers, and available support structures (approximately 2 hours)
- A technical evaluation, tools, and potential services (Institute of Integrated Studies) - In the future, what kind of tools could ideally support studies and working, above all, what could help other students and employees in a similar situation (approx. half a day). During - and after - each activity there will be a detailed discussion, along with information about any findings. After this point on, participating students can apply to the JKU to take exams under adapted conditions, "customized exam conditions". Examinations can be adapted to meet individual needs. Participating employees can acquire new insight into improving their workplace conditions and operational processes.
