Technical Clarification

  • As part of the project, the Institute Integriert Studieren is focusing on conducting research into services and support programs for those at the JKU who have reading and writing difficulties (RWD), as well as looking at Assistive Technologies (AT) for those suffering from RWD. The research questions will focus on:
  • What kinds of technical solutions are there already and what is needed in order to provide ideal support services to those suffering from RWD. The institute will explore how technology can be applied specifically to support this target group, including identifying existing aids and assistive technologies, as well as the required legal parameters and funding opportunities in Austria.
  • Should innovative resources suitable to the target group (such as current AI technologies, particularly LLMs) be taken into consideration?
  • How can the testing and diagnostic process be applied via technical solutions to automatically create and personalize test texts?
  • What kinds of tools and solutions are available to analyze and measure the complexity of written texts?

The interdisciplinary research team aims to create innovative technological approaches to make life easier for those living with dyslexia and enhance inclusion in academia. The primary objective here is to:

  • Test software and resources: Interested parties can test the available software applications and tools in order to evaluate their features and applicability.
  • Explore rental options: In addition to testing, tools can also be loaned out to be used in a real-world environment and test their applicability in everyday use.
  • On-site support during use: The lab is available, however, we ask that you make an appointment in advance in order to ensure personalized support and assistance.
  • Online access to the lab: Online access allows users to virtually access the lab and take part in an interactive forum containing software information and coping strategies shared by others living with dyslexia. Using the feedback function, participants can share their own experiences. A blog providing regular updates on the latest developments and tests will also be available to keep users informed. An initial version of this online lab will be launched during the first quarter of 2024.
