Analysis and Optimization of the transdermal Blood-Velocity-Measurement

Bruno Bosnjak

The measuring of the blood flow velocity turns out to be very difficult, because you have to bring in a probe head into the veins or arteries. But due to the diploma thesis of Dipl.-Ing. Florian Langeder, it is possible to look through the illuminated skin with a microscope, detect the "white light" reflecting erythrocytes (red blood cells), film them with a CCD-Camera, make a video and trace these red blood cells and calculate the velocity of blood with a calculation algorithm.

As one can easily imagine, this algorithm is very complex and need accordingly a lot of time. So it is not applicable in practice. That was the reason why this algorithm had to be accelerated. For that there was the option to rewrite the algorithm or, like used here, to swap out the calculations to an external processor.

Furthermore the best settings for the construction and the detecting software, to gain the best quality, were tested and applied. For an easier handling the construction was fixed to a linear table, what allows a finer and easier adjustment.
