Mauterndorf Winterschool 2025

23rd International Winterschool on New
Developments in Solid State Physics

Castle of Mauterndorf, February 9-14, 2025

Burg Mauterndorf

Program

The Mauterndorf Winterschool 2025 in the castle of Mauterndorf will feature 26 invited talks and tutorial lectures (see list below) and there will be a large poster session of contributed presentations on Wednesday evening in the "Gemeindesaal" in the village centre.

The School starts on Sunday, 9 February 2025 at 5 p.m. with a Welcome Reception and registration in the castle.
During the week, there will be two morning and two evening sessions each day, with free time in between for skiing or other activities. The famous Winterschool ski race will take place on Friday noon, with the farewell party and winners ceremony in the evening.

We are looking forward to exciting talks and lively discussions and hope that you will take home many new ideas that will inspire your research.

Venue

The location of the International Winterschool on New Developments in Solid State Physics is the picturesque 13th century castle of Mauterndorf, a small village in the heart of the Austrian Alps which had already been a station on an ancient Roman trading route over the Radstädter Tauern: You can still see an original Roman mile stone in the middle of the village. On the location of the medieval castle there had then been a Roman fort.
In medieval times, the castle of Mauterndorf, situated on a rocky cliff, had been a toll station, and the summer residence of the archbishops of Salzburg.

Social Program

In the afternoon between the morning and evening sessions, there is some time for skiing, snow shoe walking or other activities in the snow or discussions in the local cafes, bars and restaurants. Mauterndorf is a small village and you will probably meet some colleagues wherever you go.
You can just step into one of the ski shuttle busses (free of charge), with stops throughout the village, and get to the cable car in a few minutes, which takes you up the mountain Großeck and Speiereck. On a sunny day it is also very nice to just go up the mountain and enjoy the wonderful view of the Austrian Alps, for example from the Panorama-Restaurant, or on the Winter Wonderland Walk, which is 3 kilometres long and with a max 6% inclination perfectly suited for sledges and toboggans or snowshoe hiking.

We would like to encourage you to take part in our SKI RACE, which has a long tradition at the Winterschool and is to be considered as a fun event! It will take place on Friday, February 14, at 1 p.m. on the mountain Großeck.

However, please bear in mind that the participation is at you own risk!

The registration for the race is possible between Monday morning and Wednesday 12:00 at the conference desk: please register either only individually or individually and as a team member. The ski teams must consist of 4 persons, among them 1 senior.

There will be separate registration lists for Ladies, Junior Gentlemen (age < 40), Senior Gentlemen (age > 40), Snowboarders, (Children) and Teams
Team: 4 persons (among them 1 Senior).
Everybody who is a member of a team has to sign up as an individual as well.

There are well scheduled flights to the main European cities and it is well linked up to the main transport hubs of Frankfurt, Vienna, London and Zurich. Coming by taxi or rented car the drive to the village of Mauterndorf on the Tauernautobahn motorway takes approximately 90 minutes.

Mauterndorf can be reached on the A 10 Tauernautobahn motorway via the St. Michael exit and then by taking the B 99 to Mauterndorf.
Please note! A motorway toll sticker (Vignette) is required for all motorways in Austria. There is also an additional motorway toll for the Tauerntunnel (between Flachauwinkel-Süd and Zederhaus) heading south and for the Katschbergtunnel (between Rennweg and St. Michael) heading north. There is plenty of parking space available on site.

Visitors who do not wish to purchase a motorway sticker can reach Mauterndorf as follows:

Heading south from the city of Salzburg: Take Salzachtal-Bundesstraße (B 159) to Bischofshofen, then the B 99 via Obertauern to Radstadt in Lungau (approx. 90 minutes)
Heading east from Zell am See: Take Pinzgauer Straße (B 311) from Zell am See to Bischofshofen, then the Katschberg Straße B 99 via Obertauern to Radstadt in Lungau (approx. 95 minutes)
Heading north from Kärnten: Take the road from Spittal an der Drau to Katschberg Straße (B 99) via Gmünd, Rennweg, St. Michael to Mauerndorf (approx. 40 minutes)
