The International Winterschool on New Developments in Solid State Physics is located in the picturesque 13th century castle of Mauterndorf, a small village in the heart of the Austrian Alps which had already been a station on an ancient Roman trading route over the Radstädter Tauern: You can still see an original Roman mile stone in the middle of the village. On the location of the medieval castle there had then been a Roman fort.
In medieval times, the castle of Mauterndorf, situated on a rocky cliff, had been a toll station, and the summer residence of the Salzburg archbishops.
