Stochastics is a generic term for the fields of probability and mathematical statistics and focuses on the mathematical modelling of random events. Methods and results from stochastics are related to various other mathematical disciplines and are essential tools in almost all sciences and many fields of industry and economy.
Accordingly, stochastics is also an important part of mathematics education at schools. Courses offered by the Institute of Stochastics aim to provide an overview of mathematical theory and demonstrate various potential applications.
Research by institute members includes stochastic analysis and stochastic numerics with applications in biology and neuroscience, as well as statistics, time series analysis and reliability theory.
