The third installment of the JKU’s medTALK series focused on "Silent Killers - Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases", an intriguing and high-profile subject. The discussions took place at the JKU medLOFT, located at the Johannes Kepler University Linz’ Faculty of Medicine campus.

Cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction, account for around 33,000 deaths per year, making them one of the most common causes of death in Austria. Approximately half of these patients also suffer from metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Given the fact that both diabetes mellitus occur more frequently in old age (currently affecting around 800,000 Austrians) and hypertension (over 2.4 million suffer from high blood pressure in Austria), experts believe that in the coming years, demographic developments will result in a significant increase in these "silent killers". A new Clinical Research Institute (KFI) at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine will explore the interaction between the cardiovascular and metabolic systems.

The podium discussion featured:

Marina Müller, MSc., Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Department of Pathophysiology, JKU

Prim. Prof. Dr. Martin Clodi, head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Brothers of Mercy Hospital

Assist. Dr. Jessica Gottsberger, Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Kepler University Hospital

Prim. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Clemens Steinwender, head of the Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine, Kepler University Hospital

Moderator:
