ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems is a European AI network of excellence focusing on fundamental science, technical innovation, and social impact. Modern Artificial Intelligence technologies are based on machine learning. Similar to human intelligence, learning machines do not have to be programmed explicitly as they can learn from experience. Countless fundamental ideas in this field have been developed in Europe or by European researchers. However, when it comes to attracting and retaining top talent, Europe is now facing great challenges.  ELLIS is a grassroots initiative aimed to address these challenges in this competitive field by implementing a three-pillar strategy designed to maintain and foster European technological sovereignty.

The three pillars focus on fellows, students and sites. The objective is to invest in existing talent, foster new talent, and build a network of outstanding European innovation ecosystems.
