The Open Access Block Grant (OAP) for Open Access Publications resulting from Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Projects
Beginning January 1, 2024, the funding scheme in support of open access publications published within the scope of projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) will change. Beginning on this date, the FWF will no longer handle processing for scientific authors at the Johannes Kepler University Linz; processing will be centrally handled by the Open Access Office at the Main Campus Library. The FWF's Open Access Block Grant will replace the previous FWF program, "Peer-Reviewed Publications".
If you have any questions about the Open Access block grant, please do not hesitate to contact our team at the Open Access Office.

Funding Procedure
1. For publications that appear in Open Access journals outside of an agreement of the Johannes Kepler University (see point 3a), please submit an application using the application form below.
2. The library's Open Access Office will review the application and notify you as to whether or not you are eligible for Open Access funding. If your application is approved, the library will send you the address of the Open Access Office where the publisher can send the invoice.
3. You will indicate the billing address as provided by the library.
4. The publisher should send the invoice to the Open Access Office. If the publisher can only send the invoice directly to the author, please send the invoice to the library to be paid. Please do not pay the invoice yourself!
5. The Open Access Office will then settle the invoice with the publisher and notify you accordingly. Once a funded publication has been published, the Open Access Office will archive the publication in JKU ePUB, opens an external URL in a new window.
Please note:
If you are not approved for funding under FWF Open Access Block Grant program, you may be eligible for funding as part of the JKU's internal funding programs. The JKU Open Access Office can provide you with information in this regard.
Please note, however, that publications that do not comply with the guidelines as outlined by the Austrian Science Fund cannot be included in the final project report.
Submitting an Application
The library recommends submitting your application prior to submission in order to be sure that the Austrian Science Fund's Open Access Block Grant program can cover your costs.
Please note: You can now submit applications for articles with expected publication dates of 2024.
The latest possible date to submit an application for funding is once the publisher has issued an invoice.
Any publication costs you have previously paid yourself are not eligible for reimbursement.
If you are still drafting your article but would just like general information as to if the OAP can cover article publishing costs in a specific journal, you can contact us by sending an e-mail to: open-access(at)jku.at.
