Pietro Michelucci

Pietro Michelucci identified research centers' needs during a three-day visioning workshop he conducted at the Wilson Center (attended by Tom Kalil from the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP), federal agency representatives, and distinguished researchers and visionaries) and subsequently launched the Human Computation Institute (HCI).  After spending 10 years creating and managing large-scale federal programs involving multiple teams, Dr. Michelucci decided to apply the same level of R&D pragmatism to innovation for the good of society, focusing primarily on biomedical applications. HCI managed a partnership involving Princeton University, UC Berkeley, and Cornell University to develop emerging collective intelligence methods to crowdsource biomedical research data, leveraging the cognitive capabilities of 42,000 online volunteers to accelerate Cornell University's Alzheimer's research fivefold, resulting in 12.5 million annotations and generating 50 new machine learning models.
