For any data-based decision, be it in social sciences and economics, industry or technology, be it in the physical or the virtual world, it is indispensable that the process of collecting the data is as effective as possible. Optimal design of experiments seeks to maximize the information gained from data collection schemes such as eg. monitoring, manufacturing or computer simulation. The latter is a growing field with important applications for automatically generated decisions like in artificial intelligence. In the project we will focus on this area with the specific challenge that experimental design in practice often has to adhere to external constraints. 

Univ. Prof. Dr. Werner G. Müller is currently full professor at and deputy head of the Department of Applied Statistics, opens an external URL in a new window at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria (JKU). He gained his PhD in Statistics from the University of Vienna in 1991 and has worked as an assistant/associate professor at the University of Economics Vienna until 2006. His research interests are in the areas of experimental design and spatial statistics. Author of the book Collecting Spatial Data Müller has co-edited six other books, has published more than 50 research papers in refereed journals, and has contributed with more than 70 other publications, with currently over 2500 citations on Google Scholar, opens an external URL in a new window. He serves as Coeditor of Statistical Papers (Springer), opens an external URL in a new window since 2010, as an associate editor of Spatial Statistics and the Austrian Journal of Statistics and is the founding editor of the ISBIS newsletter (2008-2011) . He has also served as President of the Austrian Statistical Society, opens an external URL in a new window (2014-2017), as Vice-President for the International Society of Industry and Business Statistics (ISBIS), opens an external URL in a new window and is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. Interaction with other research groups will thus be further strengthened, ensuring successful future development of this research field at JKU.
