Award for Dr. Yoo Jin Oh

The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) supports women conducting base-knowledge research, including a JKU physicist.

Dr. Yoo Jin Oh’s project explores the physical, biochemical and electrostatic properties of living bacterial cells and biofilms. Using a portfolio of scanning probe microscopy-based methods, she studies how bacteria bind to surfaces. Her project aims to expand our understanding of biofilm formation and understand exactly why biofilms can cause diseases, such as autoimmune diseases.

About Dr. Oh
Born in South Korea in 1981, Oh graduated in physics from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul and came to the JKU in 2009. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her work, including 3 national awards and four international awards as well as over 1 million euros in funding. She conducts research at the Institute for Biophysics (Dept. Head: Univ.Prof. Peter Hinterdorfer).
