Along with his doctoral supervisor, Clemens Thielen (Technical University of Munich), Jan Boeckmann was presented with the EURO Prize for the Common Good at this year's EURO conference in Copenhagen. The award was presented in recognition of a project that applies optimization algorithms to come up with preventive measures in the event of heavy rainfall-related flash floods. By using these specially developed algorithms (which have been given to local authorities), over 30 institutions throughout Germany have actively come up with effective preventative measures. Boeckmann is currently working at the JKU to create an improved version of the software that can access freely available data and could be made available outside of Germany.
