The Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management the premier conference for nearly 10,000 students, academics, and practitioners interested in examining management and organizations. This years’ meeting invited submissions examining the nexus of innovation, policy, and purpose in order to advance more open ways of leading, managing, and organizing. The ISM team contributes to this conference alongside its research foci.
With respect to the focus “Openness”, several ISM contributions examine the link between platform organizations and emerging technologies on the one hand and the social and business environment on the other hand. Melanie Wiener presents a study on why corporations hesitate to adopt open strategy practices despite recognizing their value. The study thus explores challenges and benefits, aiming to address potential barriers to effective implementation. Georg Reischauer co-organizes the workshop „Organizing for Emerging Digital Technologies“, which provides a forum to discuss papers on how to organize for new technologies, such as drones or AI. He further co-organizes the workshops “Platform Organizations and Societal Change” and “Responsible Digital Organizations: Leveraging Technologies for Inclusive & Greener Organizations” that both provide new insights on the link between openness of (platform) organizations and social and ecological sustainability. Moreover, in his capacity as member of the teaching committee of the Organizations and the Natural Environment division, Georg Reischauer contributes to the workshop “Teaching Sustainability“ and the panel symposium “Engaging Sustainability in and from the Field.”
Other contributions are part of the „Creating Competitiveness” focus. The panel symposium “Advancing Cognitive Research on Platform Evolution“ co-organized by Georg Reischauer provides a forum to debate the merits of examining processes of thinking, understanding, and learning in order to explain the dynamics of and caused by platform organizations. Moreover, Georg Reischauer presents insights on collaborative platform governance as part of the presenter symposium „The Relational and Informal Side of Platform Strategy” that he also co-organizes.
