JKU Corona Update Live on April 9, 2020

The Coronavirus Update series on April 9 discusses medical, psychological and moral issues at a Coronavirus intensive care unit.

Prof. Jens Meier (Professor of Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Linz), Alexandra Schaubmayr (psychotherapist at the Kepler University Hospital), and Dr. Manfred Scheuer (Bishop at the Diocese of Linz), speak about the fight for life and the inevitability of death.

87,700. That is the most recent number of worldwide deaths due to the Coronavirus pandemic. There are people who often die alone. How do medical professionals feel about the struggle between life and death? How does it feel when doctors in Italy have to apply a triage system? What is it like when elderly people in European capitals forego medical services to help younger patients instead, knowing it may cost them their own lives?

How does it feel when patients who are not allowed to have visitors ask to borrow your mobile phone so that he or she can say goodbye to loved ones? Funerals being held only with close relatives in attendance - how is this changing our social norms? Today's discussion on this Holy Thursday takes a look at these questions and more, plus the hope people still have. We are seeing an increasing number of people leaving the intensive care units in Spain and Italy - moments when life has conquered death. Moments of joy, hope, love - and also moments of faith.
