Academic Credit for Work Experience at the JKU.

During your studies, benefit from your work experience and earn ECTS credits to count toward fulfilling degree program reqjuirements.

The JKU has long been committed to recognizing students' extracurricular and work-related activities and providing opportunities to earn ECTS credits to count towards fulfilling autonomous coursework requirements in the student’s respective curriculum. In coordination with the Austrian Students' Union, the option was introduced a while back to recognize volunteer work. During the 2022/2023 academic year, the JKU introduced the opportunity to earn academic credit for study-related work experience aside from volunteering. Students now have the opportunity to earn 3 ECTS credits for study-related part-time activities, or work placement, by successfully completing the course "Studienbezogene Praxiserfahrung", opens an external URL in a new window .

The course is open to all students enrolled as a degree-seeking student (and whose curriculum includes autonomous coursework requirements), and who have acquired - or will acquire – hands-on, real-world professional work experience during the current academic year by either work placement or a part-time job, and amounting to a minimum 75 hours of work experience.

As part of the course, students will be required to write and submit a paper that closely reflects on how they can apply what they have learned during the course to real-world practices. Once students have fulfilled the criteria and upon successful completion of the courser, they can earn 3 ECTS credits to apply to their studies that will count toward fulfilling autonomous coursework requirements. Students can take the course only once during their entire period of study.

Do you volunteer in addition to your studies?

Volunteering can also earn you ECTS credits at the JKU to count toward your studies!

Since the 2010/2011 academic year, the JKU has provided opportunities for those undergoing paramedic training to earn 4 ECTS credits to count towards their studies. Beginning in 2019, firefighters and volunteer firefighters have also been able to earn academic credit to count towards fulfilling curriculum requirements.

The JKU also supports volunteer work in the social sector. Students who volunteer can earn up to 4 ECTS credits for their volunteering activities by successfully completing the course "Freiwilligenarbeit im Sozialbereich - „Lernen.Engagement.Verantwortung".
