Experienced, well-trained physicians in the 50+ generation are a key factor in providing our healthcare. Along with their professional experience and knowledge, their expertise at hospitals to educate the next generation of physicians is indispensable. Yet, on one hand, how can we continue to draw on their expertise in a way that allows the younger generation to benefit from it and, on the other hand, allows the 50+ generation (which is beginning to think about retirement) to spend the last 10-15 years of their career in a healthy, motivated way that is in tune with their personal lifestyle?

The Federal Board of Salaried Physicians of the Austrian Medical Association (ÖÄK) will address this issue on November 9 at the JKU Linz medLOFT. Over the next ten years, the shortage of qualified physicians in Austria will not be met by the next generation of physicians alone and it will be important to devise strategies aimed at drawing on the experience of more experienced physicians and keep them motivated to continue working in the system.
