Science Workshop of Upper Austria.

As a 'learning laboratory' at the JKU, the Science Workshop of Upper Austria (WSW) organizes free workshops for school students.

In cooperation with the private, non-profit Kaiserschild Foundation, the Science Workshop of Upper Austria is offering free workshops on the subjects of mathematics and physics during the 2024/2025 school year. The program is for school classes in grades 7 and 8.

Attending the Science Workshop of Upper Austria

Two 7th or 8th grade classes may take part in a workshop day at the Science Workshop of Upper Austria. Each class will attend a workshop on the topic of “grasping mathematics”, as well as a physics workshop focusing on the “climate”.

Workshops

Organized by the Science Workshop of Upper Austria, the “grasping mathematics” workshop focuses on understanding mathematics in the truest sense of the word. As part of an openly designed program of hands-on activities, the mathematics workshop features twelve different interactive stations where students can independently explore the material covered by the 6th and 7th grade mathematics curriculum.

Each station is an opportunity for students to independently learn about mathematics, feel the WOW! effect, and leave with an AHA! experience at the end of the workshop.

Organized by the Science Workshop of Upper Austria, the physics workshop involves learning more about the climate:

  • Why are sea levels rising?
  • How does the color of the earth's soil impact the earth's temperature?
  • What kind of materials are permeable to visible light and which are permeable for heat radiation?
  • How do greenhouse gases affect the earth's temperature?

Students will independently conduct hands-on experiments at different stations, record their observations and measuring results, and analyze their findings. The workshop gives students an opportunity to learn more about the underlying factors behind climate change and what the implications are.
