The Academy of Opportunities.

Opening Up New Perspectives for Teens.

Resilience awareness and workshops tailored specifically to the needs of apprentices and school students.

For many young people, phrases like, “I can't do this”, or “What's the point?”, reflect a sense of despondency and a lack of prospects, and not just by those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The school system, with its early institutional departmentalizing and disregard for individual life situations, fails to foster the existing potential, despite many attempts by passionate educators. Sponsored by the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour, the Academy of Opportunities is a project by the JKU Circus of Knowledge to offer new opportunities to bring about change.

Becoming Experts Through Experience

Learning - without calling it “learning” - involves creating a safe space for young people to have the courage to pursue their personal interests and passions, as well as make mistakes they can ultimately learn from. Our workshops involve a range of artistic activities and give young people an opportunity to decide for themselves how they want to approach these activities.

Experts working in the field of youth services believe that work-related and social skills that teens learn in school are insufficient, especially when it comes to successfully mastering additional (apprenticeship) qualifications. The psychological stress involved can often be compounded on account of the crises and uncertainties we face today, such as wars, climate change, inflation, online hate, and body shaming. The Academy also works with psychotherapists to create psychotherapeutic resilience exercises that artists apply directly in their workshops. This is an opportunity for teens to strengthen their sense of resilience, be more mindful, exercise empathy, use cognitive skills and, last but not least, boost their self-confidence.

The workshops' experiences and outcomes will culminate at the Festival of Possibilities (=Festival der Möglichkeiten), bringing theater, dance, and vocals to the stage at the JKU Circus of Knowledge.
