Studying Medicine: 11,904 Prospective Applicants Took Part in the Admissions Procedure

A total of 11,904 prospective applicants (out of 15,158 registered applicants) recently took part in the admissions procedure to study medicine in Austria.

As in the past, the admissions examinations to qualify for a spot in a medical degree program took place in several locations throughout Austria. The examinations to study at the MedUni Vienna took place at the Messe Wien, in Graz, examinations to study at the MedUni Graz took place at the Stadthalle Graz, in Upper Austria, applicants took the exam at the Messe Wels, and in Innsbruck, the exam to get into the Medical University of Innsbruck took place at the Messe Innsbruck.

The numbers in detail:
MedUni Vienna: Out of a total of 7,384 who originally signed up to take the examination, 5,920 prospective applicants took the admissions examination to enroll at the MedUni in Vienna.
- Medical University of Innsbruck: 2,350 prospective applicants took the exam this past Friday (3,196 had registered at the March to take the examination).
- Medical University of Graz: 2,123 prospective applicants took the exam (2,603 had signed up in advance).
- Faculty of Medicine in Upper Austria (JKU Linz): 1,511 prospective applicants (out of 1,975 who had registered in advance by the end of the online deadline) took the examination at the Messe Wels.

MedAT-H and MedAT-Z Admissions Examination Sections:
The admission test to study medicine (MedAT-H) is a multi-section written examination divided into the following sections:
- Fundamental Education: Reviewing content from past school subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
- Text Comprehension: Reviewing reading skills and text comprehension.
- Cognitive abilities: This section consists of five task groups of tasks (assembling shapes and figures, understanding numerical sequences, verbal fluency, memorization and recall, and identifying implications), as well as assessing basic cognitive abilities and skills.
- Social-emotional skills: Recognizing emotions, controlling emotions, and making socially responsive decisions, thereby covering key aspects of social-emotional skills.

For the most part, the entrance examination for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is identical to the MedAT-H examination but the Manual Skills section includes Wire Bending and Mirror Shaping instead of the Text Comprehension and Recognizing Implications

An Overall Total of 1,900 Spots to Study Medicine
In all, a total of 1,900 applicants can be accepted to study medicine and dentistry starting in the 2024/2025 academic year, 50 more than last year, including 772 (2023: 760) at the Medical University of Vienna, 420 (2023: 410) at the Medical University of Innsbruck, 388 (2023: 370) at the Medical University of Graz, and 320 (2023: 310) at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine.

In regard to studies, a minimum of 95% of these studies are reserved for EU citizens and those of equal status eligible to study, and a minimum of 75% of spots are available to applicants holding secondary school-leaving certificates issued in Austria. During the 2024/2025 academic year, up to 85 of the 1,900 spots in the medical degree program will be will be allocated for public service purposes after graduation within federal states, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and the Federal Ministry of Defense.

Applicants intending to earn one of these spots in the program are required to complete the standard admissions process to study in their preferred location and agree with the respective institution to commit to performing duties in the public interest.
