Abstract:
As the world faces an unprecedented biodiversity crisis, climate change is rapidly emerging as a major driver of species extinctions, interacting with other human-induced stressors like overexploitation and habitat destruction. While empirical data on climate-driven extinctions in modern times is scarce, the deep-time fossil record offers a rich archive of extinction processes. In this talk, I will explore how we can extract valuable insights from this archive to understand the link between climate change, habitat loss, and extinction risk. I will also address the inherent biases in fossil data, ranging from differential preservation and sampling to colonial legacies. Finally, I will introduce methods to account for these biases in a robust epistemiological framework, covering approaches based on Granger causality, quasi-experimental designs, and structural causal modeling.
