Abstract:
Squats are punctual material failures at railway tracks which can lead to critical effects when not detected or removed in time. Investigations in the last years pointed out the severity ofthis problem, although relevant questions about root causes remained open. A main reason for this situation may be the challenging detectability of squat genesis as well as the broad palette of potential root causes, such as track characteristics, trafficpatterns and loads as well as maintenance. A comprehensive study of these effects requires high effort of data preparation since many different sources of various owners, quality and quantity have to be merged adequately.
In this seminar, we’ll discuss the problems of data preparation and statistical squat models, both for the description of the risk of squat occurrence as well as time-to-failure models underconsideration of different squat types treated as competing risks. This allows to determine a health indicator along the track and supports the planning of preventive maintenance actions. Data from the Swiss railway have been applied for model developmentand provide corresponding examples.
